The latest news from The Henley College

Best exam results ever

Hundreds of students queued to receive their AS and A Level results at the Henley College for the annual exam results day and once again the results proved to be an improvement on last year’s excellent results with a pass rate of 97.6% pass rate and an incredible 73.5% of all grades at A-C Level. Virtually half the grades were at A or B.

Among the very good individual results, 5 students achieved 4 A grades with a further 19 achieving 3 grades at A. A total of 22 A level subjects achieved an unbeatable 100% pass rate.

The International Baccalaureate results were released in July and again the Henley College can report an excellent set of results. The pass rate was a very impressive 98% with a total group of 59 students. 6 students gained an overall score of 40 points or over which is equivalent to over 5 grade As at A Level with one student gaining a score of 43 points which is equivalent to 6 grade

The National Diploma students also recorded an incredible pass rate overall of 99.5% with first diplomas achieving 99.00%. There was a huge increase of students gaining the top grades of three distinctions on the national diplomas from 12.1% to 25.8% this year. On the Business diploma a total of 10 student gained three distinctions and will receiving a special group award for excellence in business at the College’s awards evening in September.

The principal Tom Espley said of the excellent results:
“ I am delighted with the results this year that more than match those of last year which we have achieved with an even higher number of students. I would like to congratulate all our students on their hard work and dedication which has led to these superb A and AS level, IB and vocational results. The college continues to be an outstanding provider of advanced level qualifications. I am proud of the achievements of all our students and wish them every success in the future.”

Open auditions for the next drama production

The college theatre group is holding open auditions at 1.30pm on Wednesday 10th September in The Studio Theatre for this years enrichment production. The production this year is ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOOS NEST and follows last years sell out production of WE WILL ROCK YOU.

Most people will be familiar with the story from the successful film of the 1970’s with Jack Nicholson in the leading role, but maybe won’t be as familiar with the play version. The college first performed the play almost 10 years ago and there have been major revivals of it since then, most notably at The Barbican with Gary Sinise in 2001 and in the West End with Christian Slater in 2006, so it’s about time it returned to Henley in a brand new version. Director Nic Saunders, “It will be exciting to revisit a play we did well before and see it come to life with a new cast and some new ideas.” All college students are welcome to audition, be it for on stage or behind the scenes roles.

Former Henley College student wins silver at the Olympics

TFormer Henley College student, Colin Smith rowed for Great Britain in the men's eight at the Beijing Olympics. The crew won a silver medal on the final day of the rowing regatta in Beijing.

Colin grew up in Zimbabwe and came to England to escape the economic and political troubles. He took A levels in English, Economics, Geography and Business Studies and went on to Oxford University. During his time at Henley he rowed at the Leander Club where he was inspired by the heroes of his sport Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent.
